Chapter 1

well...
Well.

Now this is truly odd. And I don’t think the words “I must be dreaming” is appropriate for this one.

Could it be that I’m inside that book? Or is it a sort of gate key to this world? This place looks like the waking world, but there is something odd about this place. Something does not feel right. There is something ominous about that carousel...

I must get back to the library. Lord Daniel must be looking for me right now. Who knows what Mervyn might do to the place once he finds out that I’m not there…

[posted here for introductory purposes. or how Lucien ended up in the City]

A deep loud THUD echoed throughout the room. Lucien strained his ears towards where it came from. From the time that he had been put in charge of the unrealized books he had come to know almost every nook and cranny of the library. Of course, Dream expands it to accommodate more and more manuscripts, but he had always kept tabs on each and every single one.

And this particular thud came from an unfamiliar place.

It is strange that the library expand itself now, Lucien thought. The funeral for Lord Morpheus had just passed. Lord Daniel was still meeting with his siblings for the first time.

Tired as he was, he wasn’t one to let any book remain not shelved or unaccounted for, so he trudged towards where the sound came from.

Several minutes later, past the shelves of limbo and mystery, he found what he was looking for: a voluminous tome opened, face down, on the floor. There was no written title on either the spine or front of the book, only an illustration of an elaborate carousel.

Curious, Lucien hefted the book into his arms and scanned the pages. To his surprise, the usually static words shimmered in the page, seemingly moving and flowing into one another. Turning the page, he further found out that the book was still writing itself, the solid block letters glimmering to surface in black ink.

“Fascinating,” Lucien thought. “But, might this belong to Lord Destiny? Does he have books other than the one chained to him?” And before he could stop himself, he read the new paragraph that had just appeared into being.

And as he was reading the words Lucien suddenly disappeared from the library of the Dreaming. The sound of the heavy book hitting the floor reverberated amongst the books, but no one was there to hear.

The next thing he knew, Lucien found himself aware that he was standing under a night sky, and that there was a brightly-coloured carousel, turning, in front of him.
